Malacofaunal Diversity and Abundance along the Coastline of Gaddani, Balochistan

ABSTRACT
This paper deals the diversity and abundance of molluscs along the coast of Gaddani, Balochistan. A total of 2997 specimens of 4 different classes (Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polyplacophora and Cephalopoda) of phylum Mollusca were collected. 1930 specimens of 216 species of 38 families of class Gastropoda were recorded while 1059 specimens of 134 species of 24 families of class Bivalvia, 7 specimens of one species of one family of Cephalopodes and one specimen of class polyplacophora were collected. Family Trochidae Rafinesque, 1815 with 28 species while family Veneridae Rafinesque, 1815 with 25 species, which were found in highest species richness of class Gastropoda and Bivalvia, respectively from this coast. Family Littorinidae Children, 1834 was found in highly abundance of 19% (370 specimens of total collection of Gastropoda), while family Ostreidae Rafinesque, 1815 of Bivalvia, with 28% of abundance (296 specimens). Simpson’s diversity index was very high about 0.893 and 0.869 of Gastropoda and Bivalvia, respectively.

INTRODUCTION
Malacofauna means molluscs of an area. Molluscs are benthic macro invertebrates which play an important part in intertidal ecosystem (Rajendra and Sivaperuman, 2020). They are found in many parts of the biosphere such as ocean, brackish, freshwater and terrestrial areas. Molluscs are one of the leading groups of ocean communities contributing mainly to the local biodiversity (Rueda et al., 2009; Rubal et al., 2018). Molluscs are one of the most diverse phylum in terms of species diversity, showing a diverse variety of form, size, colour and shape. They provide a vital source of protein for human after fish (Khan and Liu, 2019). Besides food they are also valuable in different industries such as jewelry, medicine, dyes and cement.
Woodwards (1856) was probely the first to report marine molluscs from Pakistan. In the recent past several reports have appeared on the molluscs from the coastline of Pakistan (Tirmizi and Zehra, 1982; Moazzam and Ahmed, 1994; Kazmi and Naushaba, 2004; Kazmi et al., 2019; Barkati and Rehman, 2005; Khanum et al., 2020), through the information on molluscs from Balochistan coast is limited (Khan and Dastagir, 1971; Tirmizi and Zehra, 1982; Afsar et al., 2012; Ghani and Afsar, 2017; Gondal et al., 2020).
The aim of this study to initiate study the diversity of Mollusca from Balochistan coast. This study will help to develop a plan to conserve marine molluscan diversity from Balochistan. The information should be useful for fisheries biologists as well as shell fisheries managers to determine the fishing efforts for this shellfishery from Pakistani waters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Samples were collected from coast of Gaddani (25° 07’ N, 66° 43’ E) Balochistan frequently visiting at low tide on monthly basis from June 2022 to November 2022. The sites were thoroughly investigated for molluscan diversity and their distribution pattern. Samples of molluscs were collected as epifauna, and as infauna by using hand picking method. The tools like hammer, forceps, sieves, chisels were used to detach species from their substratum. Samples was sorted and preserved in 70% alcohol. The samples were properly labled and then frozen until further investigation.
Identification of molluscans
Molluscan samples were identified on the basis of chonchological characteristics such as shell characters, color and shape (Baharuddin et al., 2018) also spire length and shape, mouth opening, opercula shape, umbilicus shape and size colour, and ornamentation of the shell were primarily used to identify the gastropoda. For bivalves shell, characters such as adductor muscle scars, pallial line and no of lateral tooth were noticed to identify the species using references of Roberts et al. (1982), FAO (1998) and Kazmi et al. (2019). The index of world register of marine species (WoRMS) and Marine Molluscan fauna of the Pakistani coastal waters, was checked for the authenticity of species taxonomy and identification.
Data analysis
Quantitative analysis were conducted for the study of occurrence and diversity. For this purpose, randomly three replicates quadrates of 1x1m2 from each site was set, to detect the distribution and occurrence pattern of malacofauna in different coastal areas of Balochistan. Simpson’s Diversity Index was calculated by Simpson diversity index equation as:

where, D is diversity Index, ni is number of organisms of a particular species, N is total number of organisms of all species.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Diversity of Malacofauna in Gaddani
During study period 1930 specimens of 216 species of 38 families of gastropods were collected while 1059 specimens of 134 species of 24 families of Bivalvia, were reported. Seven specimens of one species of one family of Cephalopodes were collected while only one specimen of class polyplacophora was collected from Gaddani site (Fig. 1).
Simpson’s Diversity Index (SDI) of families of Gastropoda from Gaddani was about 0.893 which shows the high diversity of families of Gastropoda of this area. While Simpson’s Diversity Index (SDI) of Bivalvia from Gaddani was about 0.869 which shows less high diversity of Bivalvia of this site as compared to Gastropoda. Species richness of Gastropoda and Bivalvia were about 216 and 134, respectively, which was very high in this area. Month wise highest SDI of gastropods was observed in June 2022 which was about 0.9103 and least high SDI in July about 0.8552. SDI in September with 0.8638, in August was about 0.8658; 0.8740 in October and 0.8794 in November 2022. SDI of families of class Bivalvia was observed in June about 0.894, 0.882 in July, 0.880 in August, 0.828 in September, 0.843 in October and 0.826 in November. Which was shown the highest SDI in June while least high SDI in November 2022 (Fig. 2).
Class Gastropoda
Gastropods were reported in highest percentage of occurrence about 64% of total collection of malacofauna from Gaddani. Table I shows the name of species and families of Gastropoda which were collected which Table II shows % abundance of individuals and species of different families of Gastropoda in different months from June, 2022 to November 2022. Figure 3 shows the % of occurrence of 38 families of class Gastropoda. Species richness showed that much diversified class which were about 216 species. SDI of families of Gastropoda from Gaddani was about 0.893 which shown the high diversity of families of Gastropoda of this area. Family Littorinidae was found in highest % of abundence which about of (19%) out of 370 specimens of total collection of Gastropoda. Only one species Nodilittorina sp. of this family was collected in every month in high quantity. Out of 1815 highest number of species of any family 42 specimens of 28 species of family Trochidae Rafinesque, out of 1815 collected only during three months (June–August 2022) (Table I).

Second abundant family was Muricidae with 342 (17.72%) specimens of 20 species. Highly abundant species was Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) trunculus with 170 specimens were collected all months except Sep. and Oct., 2022.
Twenty two specimens of 20 species of family Fissurellidae Fleming, 1822 were collected. One specimen of Cemoria flemingiana Leach, 1852, Diodora 17 species (Reeve, 1850), Montfortia subemarginata (Blainville, 1819)and Montfortia emarginata (Blainville, 1825) was found while 2 specimens of Diodora occultata Poppe and Tagaro, 2020 and Diodora bombayana Sowerby, 1862 were collected.
Family Cypraeidae Rafinesque, 1815 was found with 157 (8.13%) speciemns of 18 species. 85 specimens of Naria nebrites were found every month, which was highly abundant species.
Eleven species of Oliva from family Olividae was found in 14% (278 specimens) of abundance of total collection of gastropoda from Gaddani. 65 and 57 specimens of O. sayana and O. julieta were collected from all months of collection.
Family Potamididae was found in relatively less abundance about (6. 94%) 134 specimens of 2 species of gastropoda. 124 specimens of Telescopium telescopium (Linnaeus, 1758) were collected every month of collection while 10 specimens of Pirenella cingulata (Gmelin, 1791) were found only June 2022. 87 specimens of 7 species of Cellana of family Nacellidae was found in 4.51% of abundance. Highly abundant species C. tramoserica was found in every month of collection. Twenty specimens of 11 species of family Triphoridae Gray, 1847 was found in 1.02% of abundance.
Family Litiopidae Gray, 1847 were collected with 49 specimens of 10 species, only in two-month June and July 2022.

Family Turbinidae Rafinesque, 1815 and Naticidae Guilding, 1834 both were found with 7 species each and 14 and 30 specimens, respectively.
Family Rostellariidae was found in 3.94 % of abundance. 74 specimens of 5 species were found, among them 4 species of Tibia were collected.
Twelve families of Gastropoda from Gaddani had only one species with different number of specimens i.e., 374 individuals of Nodilittorina pyramidalis of family Littorinidae, 15 individual of Pyrene filmerae of family Columbellidae, 12 individuals of Austrorissopsis consobrina of family Aclididae, 7 individuals of Turbonilla sp. of family Pyramidellidae, 6 specimens of Pupoides albilabris of Pupillidae anf 3 individuals of Eoacmaea omanensis of family Eoacmaeidae were recorded. Remaining 6 families namely: Pseudococculinidae, Epitoniidae, Melongenidae, Nassariidae, Turridae, and Siphonariidae had only one specimen of species Kaiparapelta askew, Epitonium clathrus, Pugilina cochlidium, Nassarius persicus, Turricula javana and Siphonaria denticulate respectively. The lowest % of occurrence was found in Pseudococculinidae, Epitoniidae, Melongenidae, Nassariidae, Turridae and Siphonariidae which was about 0.05% (only one specimen).
Class Bivalvia
Second highest abundant class was Bivalvia which were about 34 % of total collection of mollusca from Gaddani. 1059 specimens of 134 species of 24 families of bivalvia were collected during study from Gaddani (Table III). SDI of bivalvia from Gaddani was about 0.8693 which shows the less high diversity of Bivalvia at this site compared to gastropodas.
Figure 4 revealed the % of occurrence of 24 families of class Bivalvia. Out of 24 families, 15 families were found throughout study period. Out of 134 species, 93 (69%) species belonged to 6 families and remaining 41 (31%) of species were other 18 families (Table IV). Family Ostreidae was highly abundant family with 28% of abundance (296 specimens of 11 species). These 11 species belonging to 4 genera. Family Carditidae was second abundant family about 13 % of total bivalve’s collection from Gaddani. Only one species Cardites floridanus of the family Cartididae was collected every month in high quantity.
Family Veneridae was highly diversified family which had 25 species (19%) with 81 specimens (7.56%) of total collection of Bivalvia. 19 species of Genus Dosinia and one species of 6 genus namely Leukoma, Sunetta, Venerupis, Petricola, Callista and Paphia of family Veneridae were collected. 12 speciemens of Dosinia exoleta was collected during study in this site. was Chamidae which had 17 species (12.68%) with 106 (10.01%) speciemens. 3 Genus namely Chama, Pseudochama and Arcinella were collected of this family. 14 species of genus Chama were reported during study. Family Arcidae with 16 species (11.94 %) with 81 specimens (7.65%) were reported. One species of Arca, 6 species of Anadara and 9 species of Barbatia were collected of this family.
Family Tellinidae with 86 speciemens of 12 genus and 13 species were collected during this study. Family Ostreidae with 11 species of 4 genus and 296 specimens while family Cardiidae with 11 species of 6 genus and 30 speciemens were reported.
Eight families of Bivalvia from Gaddani were reported only one genus and one species with different number of specimens i.e., 140 individuals of Cardites floridanus of family Carditidae, 5 specimens of Ensiculus cultellus of family Pharidae, 2 individuals of Mya truncate of Myidae, Mimachlamys varia of Pectinidae and Loripes clausus of Spondyliidae were collected. Only one specimen Tucetona laticostata, Lima vulgaris and Periploma (Periploma) planiusculum of family Glycymerididae, Limidae and Periplomatidae was collected in June 2022, respectively.
Class Cephalopoda
Seven specimens of one species (Sepia officinalis) of family Sepiidae Keferstein, 1866 was collected whole study period except July 2022. 3 specimens of S. officinalis were found in Oct. 2022 from the coast of Gaddani (Table V).
Class Polyplacophora
Only one specimen of Chiton lamyi of family Chitonidae Rafinesque, 1815 of class Polyplacophora, was collected in June 2022 (Table V).

Discussion
This study was carried out to evaluate the occurrence and abundance molluscan fauna specially gastropoda and bivalvia in intertidal region of Gaddani Coast, Balochistan. The surveys were conducted at three sampling sites, which were revealed 216 species of Gastropoda and 134 species of Bivalvia, that are commonly inhabit in coast. It is very difficult to assess the total number of molluscan species from the previously-published literature because many studies did not describe any taxonomic detail, nor provided illustrations or images. The usage of different and older synonyms is also a problem. A previous study on the total number of species recorded from Pakistan by Kazmi et al. (2019) reported 713 species of Gastropoda, 349 species of Bivalvia from the Pakistan coast and concluded that the Balochistan coast was highly diverse with respect to molluscan community but not studied in detailed.
Present study, gastropods were reported in highest percentage of occurrence about 64% of total collection of malacofauna from Gaddani. Out of 216 species of gastropoda, 50% of species were belonged to 6 families and remaining 50% species were other 211 families. One species Nodilittorina sp. of family Littorinidae was collected in every month in highest % of abundance, of total collection of gastropoda. During the present study it was observed that 42 specimens of 28 species of family Trochidae Rafinesque, 1815, were collected which was the highest number of species of any family of gastropoda.
Simpson’s Diversity Index (SDI) of families of gastropoda was about 0.893 which shown the high diversity of families of gastropoda of this area. While 134 species of 24 families of Bivalvia, were reported from this site. Out of 134 species, 93 (69%) species were belonging to 6 families and remaining 41 (31%) of species were other 18 families. The current findings of Cerithium spp. and Thais spp. were like the findings of Ghani and Afsar (2017), who found these species in Jiwani, Balochistan. These were also reported by Gondal et al. (2012) from Sonmiani Bay in Balochistan. Khan and Dastagir (1971) reported Telescopium telescopium (Potamididae) from Pakistan. Molluscan species like Tibia spp., Andara spp., Marcia spp., and Gari spp. have been discovered in Balochistan’s Sonmiani Bay, Ormara, Kalmar Hor, and Pasni Bay (Gondal et al., 2012; Moazzam and Ahmed, 1994). Marcia species have been found in the mangroves of Karachi, according to Barkati and Tirmizi (1986). Those of Gari spp. were identified by Kazmi and Khan (2014). Gondal et al. (2012) identified Veneridae spp. from Sonmiani, Balochistan. In present study family Veneridae was highly diversified family which had 25 species (19%) with 81 specimens (7.56%) of total collection of Bivalvia.
Conservation of biological diversity is one of the major goals for sustainable management of marine renewable resources. The species diversity has a good relationship with species richness and evenness and diversity index is maximum with high number of species and minimum with low number of species (Srinivasan, 1999). Data obtained from this study represents an important step to gain a better understanding of molluscan habitats and their essential role as habitat provider to other species.
